Spartanburg was incorporated in 1780. At the time, it was comprised of a courthouse and a few other buildings. One theory on the origin of the town’s name is that it was taken from a regiment of the South Carolina militia known as the Spartans. In the early 1800s, Spartanburg’s primary industry was cotton processing. A few of these mills still remain as historic attractions. Military installations near the city were key locations for training new recruits during both World War I and World War II.
During the summer months, local farmers flock to the Hub City Farmers’ Market to sell their produce. The contributions of Spartanburg’s Greek community are celebrated each year in the Greek Festival, an event featuring authentic Greek food and cultural activities. Residents and tourists can experience the world of art at the Spartanburg Museum of Art. Visitors of all ages will also enjoy the exciting and educational exhibits at the Spartanburg Science Center and the Spartanburg Regional Museum of History.
A variety of businesses bring valuable jobs to the community of Spartanburg. The Spartanburg Regional Healthcare system employs over 5,000 residents in the area. As Spartanburg is also the county seat, many county employees reside there. Denny’s Corporation and QS/1 Data Systems have their corporate headquarters in Spartanburg. BMW, Wal-Mart, and American Credit Acceptance also supply jobs for the community. In addition, the large network of schools and colleges in the area employs many Spartanburg residents.
Spartanburg is home to eight institutions of higher learning including the University of South Carolina Upstate, Converse College, and Wofford College. Medical students can also study at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine or the Sherman College of Chiropractic. The town is served by Spartanburg County School District Number 7, which includes Spartanburg High School, three junior high schools, and nine elementary schools. Parents can also choose from one of several private and charter schools in Spartanburg.
The town is home to Spartanburg Regional Hospital, a teaching and research facility serving five counties. Spartanburg residents are also served by the Mary Black Memorial Hospital on Skylyn Drive.
