A Cheat Sheet for a Super Healthy Smile

Smile, It Lets Your Teeth Breathe

A smile is at the top of the list of facial expressions, and while doing so with your mouth closed is often more common, an open-mouth grin is most likely not faked, so we know it’s more genuine, more indicative of joy, happiness and true pleasure and emotion. However, this is not always the case. Many people are seen smiling with their mouth closed because they are embarrassed and oftentimes, it’s because of a problem that your orthodontist could fix.

Thankfully, gone are the days when a trip to the orthodontist meant coming home with train tracks superglued to the fronts of your teeth, which tore up the inner sides of your lips and cheeks. The modern version of these is smaller and far more comfortable. There are also other less noticeable options for those who need to fix their smile.

Here are a few of your options:

Invisalign – aligners or retainers made of clear plastic, so they are invisible

Lingual braces – they go on the backs of your teeth

Ceramic braces – these are tooth-colored so that they are less noticeable

It may be that you just need to learn to relax and make it a habit of parting your lips when you’re smiling. However, if you still aren’t convinced that an open-mouth grin is necessary every so often, then check out these facts.

By Rarely Smiling with Parted Lips, You Could:

Make your teeth unnaturally sensitive to cold air

Become less inclined to routinely get thorough teeth cleaning

Create and build stress for yourself and those with whom you interact

Make yourself appear less attractive, desirable and approachable

Weaken your immune system

Genuine smiling ensures that your white blood count is high enough to keep your immune system going strong. Also, just like yawning, smiling is contagious, so you could bring joy and laughter into someone else’s life. People will trust you more too if they see you smiling occasionally. In a recent study, those who smiled were rated as most likely to be trustworthy.

So smile more often to make your day and possibly someone else’s, and if you don’t feel comfortable smiling, visit Drs. Nease and Higginbotham, and see what can be done.
